I think live performances have always been my favorite aspect of working in music, because the emotional commuication with the audience can be so clear and intense. This is especially true of small, intimate house concerts like the one that was recorded for Live @ Erica's. Some of the songs on this CD are the raw versons of older studio songs (Sometimes, Service) but most of these pieces were written during the years when I was completing my first collegiate degree. It was a time of frustration and optimism bound together by a tired but stubborn sort of perseverence. I would often argue with my professors about the ultimate truth (Would You Believe), but I struggled to find my own goals in life (Everything's Younger). Activism loomed large around me, and while I shared the frustration with the institutions of the age (Nursery Rhymes), I wanted to be part of something more than protests and politics (Battle Lines). All of my friends were getting married (Half is Better, Wide World), and while my early aspirations toward that goal went nowhere (Used To You, Confession), it was a lot of fun searching for The Perfect One. Remember that just because you catch a thousand fireflies, it doesn't mean the stars aren't out there.

Mix all those pieces together, add in a jazzed-up English folk tune (Bluesleeves) and a bit of spoken word (One Life to Live), spice it with some audience interaction and stir it around in a warm Oregon living room, and you'll have ...
